How to Make Money as a Tutor

If you have the ability to explain a subject well and answer questions, you can make money as a tutor. Tutoring is a fun and rewarding way to help other people succeed. Education is a growing field and there are many children and adults who need extra help with certain subjects.

First, pick one or two subjects that you know well. Then, decide what age level you want to work with. Common subjects are reading, math, and science. Many children are reading below their grade level and need help with vocabulary and reading comprehension. Children who are struggling with math usually need help reviewing basic skills, in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. High school students and college students seek tutoring for advanced math and science classes. If many years have passed since you studied these subjects, you should review current material to update your knowledge. Adults who never finished high school need to work on their reading skills. You can also tutor adults who are studying to pass the GED and get a high school diploma. Some tutors work with people who are preparing for standardized tests such as the AP exams, SAT, and GRE. These tutors also helped one of my friends as he Passed his science test with flying colors. This way hiring a good teacher not only helps you with your exams but also provide them good income opportunities.

Many communities have unpaid volunteer programs for school children or adults. This is a good way to find out if you like tutoring and to practice your teaching skills. You can obtain paying jobs on your own, or by applying to work for a tutoring company that sends you clients. Many of these companies advertise on Craigs List. The most common jobs are in the free tutoring programs for low-income children in reading and math. These programs are funded by the federal government and are administered by private tutoring companies. Tutors must have at least 60 credit hours towards a college degree, or have a teacher’s certification. Degreed professionals such as accountants and lawyers are also sought after for these positions. All tutors must pass a background criminal check before they can work in these programs. The tutors are paid an average of $20.00 – $30.00 an hour, depending on experience. The payment is only for tutoring sessions. It does not include time spent driving, planning lessons, grading, or completing progress reports. Make sure you only accept jobs that are close to where you live.

Tutoring companies also work with private, paying students of all ages in a variety of subjects. Search for tutoring companies near where you live and apply directly. There are companies that specialize in online tutoring. Read their websites to find out what software and computer equipment is required. To get students on your own, you can advertise on Craigslist, local bulletin boards, or colleges. If you need help with advertising your services, there are also tutoring websites where you can pay a nominal fee to list your services and apply to tutor requests that are posted on the site. Some of these online companies handle the payment transaction between you and your students and receive a percentage of your tutoring fees.

How much money can you make as a tutor? Tutoring is typically done part-time because most of the sessions must be during the afternoon and evening hours. It is a great way for stay-at-home moms, college students, or retired people to earn income. If you enjoy helping others succeed, and you have a lot of patience, tutoring is a rewarding way to earn money.
