CBD Oils & Extracts

If you are new to the CBD and Medicinal Marijuana community, and want to know what the health benefits of the plant are and why, and are maybe confused by current terminology, please continue reading.

Cannabis (Family: Cannabaceae, Genus: Cannabis L, Species: Cannabis sativa L) is one of the oldest domesticated crops. All plants in this Family and Genus produce Cannabinoids in the growing process. Around 85 types of Cannabinoids have been identified; two of the most prevalent being THC (tetrahydrocannabinol – the psychoactive agent in marijuana) and CBD (cannabidiol). These Cannabinoids can affect and interact with the Endocannabinoid System in the human body in different ways.

Throughout history, Cannabis has been grown for both industrial and medical uses. Some plant varieties that were sturdy, tall, and easy to grow were cultivated to make a variety of foods, oils, and textiles. Over the years, these varieties were bred to highlight the characteristics of these uses, leading to the type of Cannabis we now call HEMP. Today, this variety chemically contains little to none of the cannabinoid THC and thus does not produce a ‘high’, while containing high levels of other cannabinoids like CDB.

Other plant varieties were historically recognized for having psychoactive here’s the cbdfable’s list of anxiety and healing properties and were bred selectively for medicinal and religious purposes. This led to the unique varieties of Cannabis that we now call MARIJUANA. Today, this variety has varying levels of THC in addition to other cannabinoids.

Because of the legalities surrounding THC and Marijuana, only products made from industrial Hemp are legal to sell, buy, consume, and ship. For this reason, most CBD oils are extracted from Hemp plants (although some can be made from extremely low THC high CBD Marijuana plants). That is why most say ‘Hemp Oil Extract’. You will also see differences in whether they say ‘Full Spectrum’, ‘Whole Plant’, or ‘No THC’. Obviously, when it states ‘No THC’, the THC cannabinoid has been taken out of the extract. ‘Full Spectrum’ means that everything present in the extract has been kept.

‘Whole Plant’ extracts are the ‘best’ as they provide high doses of concentrated cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds from the plant helping treat a wider range of illnesses and issues. Cannabis plants as a whole are also extremely nutritious, high in Omega 3s and antioxidants so that any preparation that includes ‘Whole Plant’ extractor that has CBD Oil mixed with Hemp Seed Oil also contain these beneficial agents.

CBD Oil is available in many different forms and can be prepared in a variety of ways. It can be mixed with coconut oil, hemp seed oil, olive oil, or some other oil and sold as a food or drink additive. It can be prepared as a tincture where it is mixed in an alcohol solution that is sprayed into the mouth or placed under the tongue. It can be placed in capsules that are taken orally. It can be mixed with other products and sold as a prepared product (drinks or edibles).

It can be added to lotions for topical use. It can be condensed to wax or shatter which can then be smoked. It can also be available as a concentrated form called Crystalline. This is the purest form of the cannabinoid at 99.9% CBD. Sometimes additional agents known to target specific ailments are add to CBD preparations to better enhance the effects. For instance, melatonin can be added to a CBD preparation to help with Sleep or Anxiety disorders. In any case, just like with regular medication, you need to find your ideal dosage amount. Many preparations come with varying levels of CBD. You can always start off with the lowest dosage possible and then increase it over time until you can achieve the desired effect.

The variety of potential health benefits of CBD Oil include:

  • Can help alleviate certain cognitive problems
  • Can stimulate new bone growth and strengthen bones affected by osteoporosis

Generally speaking, there are no side effects as with manufactured drugs, however, some people have reported headaches or upset stomachs.
