A new study shows that 80% of online customers change their mind about making a purchase after reading negative online reviews.
Back in November, 2010, I wrote a story for SocialMediaToday.com titled Why a Negative Review Can Be a Positive Experience. In my article I made reference to an article on eMarketer which reported “Customer product reviews are becoming a fixture on retail and consumer brand websites, with over 80% of retailers planning to feature them by the end of 2010. The accelerated adoption of customer reviews indicates a more enlightened approach to handling negative comments—that is, the acknowledgment that occasional negative reviews do not hurt sales.
“…occasional negative reviews do not hurt sales.” Well, apparently negative online reviews do indeed hurt sales as a study conduced by Market analysis firm Cone Inc. found that 80% of online customers, after reading negative online reviews, are going in another direction, making alternate purchasing decisions. And this number is going up as last year only 67% of respondents indicated negative reviews directly impacted their decision to buy or not.
Conversely, and not surprisingly, 87% of consumers said a favorable review has confirmed their decision to go through with a purchase.
In regards to just how much impact a negative online review can have, one of the people behind the Cone study, Mike Hollywood (yes, that’s his name) said “Negative information is now just as powerful as positive information.” Now call me crazy, but that’s not exactly breaking news. Remember the old adage of ‘if you have a good experience you’ll tell 3 friends and if you have a bad one, you’ll tell 10?’ My numbers may be off but you get my point. A negative comment, review, experience and so on can be very damaging to a business or company. It’s how you as marketers deal with those negative comments in today’s digital-crazed, mobile phone madness world we live in is what can mitigate the effect of those negative online reviews.
Says Mr. Hollywood… “For marketers, that means that leaving your head in the sand and just letting people make negative comments isn’t working any longer. Reaching out and trying to make the consumer experience better, even if you can’t solve the problem, is important.”
This ties in precisely with what I wrote back in November and still very much rings true today:
Negative reviews can have a positive effect and here’s why…
They show others, be it existing customers or prospects, that you are the proverbial open book; you want to hear from EVERYONE; the good, the bad and yes, the ugly
A Social Media platform(s) then allows you to respond to those negative comments in public; it allows EVERYONE to see how you addressed a problem professionally, promptly and correctly (assuming you actually do all of these)
This in turn demonstrates your willingness to admit fault (you are human after all) which will help establish an emotional connection
Overall, there are two ways to look at all this…
1. From a consumer perspective, it’s almost a “Reader Beware” when it comes to reviews. A little cynicism may not be a bad thing when it comes to reading online reviews because like or not, there are those unscrupulous companies that will create phony reviews – positive ones of course.
2. From a company perspective, it is vitally important to allow an open-ended platform for the public to write a review on your particular product, service or ware. It’s obvious online reviews carry clout so it’s best to allow for reviews and to address those that need addressing and to NEVER create and or flood your site,, blog etc with fictional positive, glowing reviews. Trust me, the public will catch on sooner or later and then you won’t have to worry about having a Social Media presence anymore because you will be finished, literally.
What’s your opinion on online reviews as both a consumer and as a marketer/advertiser?
As a consumer, how much weight do you put on online reviews?
As a marketer or advertiser, do you monitor what’s being said about your product or client’s products and your company?
Do you try and control the conversation, filtering out negative comments?

Social Media Marketing and the measurement thereof is always a hot topic. In this exclusive 7-part series – which begins today and will continue every Thursday for the next 6 weeks, I will delve into the wonderful world of Social Media Marketing Analytics (SMA) and help you better understand what it is and why it is so important.
Social Media Marketing Analytics… “Huh?”
Why do I get the feeling that’s the response many marketers have when asked about Social Media Marketing Analytics?
Well fear not marketers of the world, I am here to help.
Part I – Overview
Social Media Marketing Analytics, as defined by the Altimeter Group is “The discipline that helps companies measure, assess and explain the performance of social media initiatives in the context of specific business objectives.”
It also appears to be an enormous obstacle that many organizations are working hard toward understanding and utilizing in an effective strategic standpoint.
No Shortage Of Solutions
There are many Social Media Marketing Analytics solutions on the market, and quite frankly they are a dime a dozen. Before you begin doing your diligence, it is of course necessary to know the answers to a few questions such as:

I will also apply situational examples based on past experiences, which should adequately paint a nice picture for all those who are following along.
Libya is a country in Northern Africa. It made the headlines once with the Civil War in 2011, when people found out that it’s an Islamic country with oil reserves. In this country, a gallon of water is more expensive than a gallon of gasoline. While rich in gold and oil, one saying mocks the exploitation of its resources by the West: ‘The country is rich, the people poor’.
Libya though has a lot more to offer. Culturally and geographically, it’s usually included in the Mediterranean region, with a surprising number of Greek and Roman monuments. Ever heard of Aristippus of Cyrene? Cyrene is in Lybia, meaning hedonism, as we know it now, originated in Libya. Unlike in any other African countries, visitors can explore Sahara considerably easier. In Libya, there are several pieces of prehistoric art, which can be seen in the desert, especially in Ghat. Leptis Magna used to be the residence of a Roman Emperor. The ruins resisted incredibly well to the test of time and Libyan archaeologists plan to recover even more of the ancient site.
For a better understanding of the Berber tradition, visit Nalut. As for shopping, good coffee and sunbaths, you can go to Benghazi. The beaches on the coast are popular attractions. Actually, since Libya’s territory is made up mostly by the desert (with only a few oasis towns), the majority of the population lives in only three cities.
Libyans value social interactions. They enjoy a fair share of small talk. Outsiders usually call them indiscreet or nosy. They might seem so since there aren’t as many taboos about personal life as in other parts. People ask each other about how much money one earns, how much they paid for their clothes, about family, why doesn’t someone have children and so on. Since family is important to them, they don’t understand how you can transcend to adulthood without getting married. One thing though falls under the label of imprudence: to ask about the female members of one’s family.
There is a ban on alcohol, but Libyans don’t take it seriously. They make their own drink or buy it illegally, without much fuss. Some vans stop in secluded spots and distribute drinks to anyone interested. Police usually knows about it and they might perceive a fee, but they don’t seem to back up the government on this one. If you think of moving to Libya, some things could help you make up your mind. Students enrolled in public universities earn as much as an employee in that field. Besides, banks don’t perceive interests on loans. Newly-weds receive, under certain terms, free accommodation.
Libya is a Muslim country that respects its traditions. Therefore, those who travel here must take care not to offend with their behavior or clothing.
Libya’s state religion is Islam and the official language is Arabic. Libyan Islam revolves around Sanoussiya, a religious brotherhood founded in Cyrenaica in 1843. Fiercely anti-Christian, Sanoussiya, which took over the country through zawiyas and controlled the caravan traffic, violently opposed the Italians.
Through all the customs and prohibitions in the country there are the following ones: on the street, honking and flashes indicate a cordial welcome, so it is customary to respond; clothing must be decent, molded shorts and tops must be avoided, especially by the ladies; men should not be talking to the Libyan girls because they can put them in a uncomfortable situation. Before you enter someone’s home and especially when visiting a mosque, the shoes must always be removed; women should wear a veil when entering a mosque; do not offer money to someone offering their hospitability; do not drink or eat in public during Ramadan; gum chewing is not seen with good eyes; when you give food to someone, you should do it with your right hand; do not insert any alcoholic beverage in Libya. A non-Muslim caught in public place drunk can be sentenced to prison from 2-6 months, can receive a fine or can be expelled; taking pictures in cities or provinces is restricted due to numerous works related to territorial defense; you must avoid hugging and kissing in public.
Although naturally speaking, this country has nothing surprising, the architecture of the buildings and its culture make tourists remain astonished. The fact is that a history like that of Libya is always surprising and the best thing a tourist can do is to take note of the available tours, which are organized frequently.
Stunningly clear water laps onto the warm, white, sandy beach. Palm trees stand proud and lofty against the clear, blue sky. Mango and papaya blossoms blend with the salty spray of the ocean, giving an aroma that is distinctly tropical.
Welcome to the Bahamas, the land of picturesque water, lovely beaches and friendly people. With approximately 5,000 square miles of land and 100,000 miles of marine territory, the Bahamas offer endless possibilities for your vacation.
Paradise Island is home to the Atlantis resort. Housing approximately 2,500 rooms in six towers, this hotel offers all the amenities and entertainment for tourists enjoyment. Four restaurants, a movie theater, library, fitness center, golf course and nightclub are just the beginning of what this resort offers its guests. Several pools and water slides and a pottery studio add hours of fun for you and your family.
Part of the historical section of Nassau, Bay Street is a shopper’s paradise. Gucci, Hilfiger and Fendi have stores on Bay Street. John Bull is the official Rolex Merchant of Nassau. This store also carries name-brand perfumes and luxury purses. Shops selling cigars, liquor, leather goods, linens and clothes are all found in district. Native-made items can be found at the Straw Market, also on Bay Street. Handwoven straw purses, hats and other wares are displayed in this open-air market. Off of West Bay Street is Christ Church Cathedral. This church has been at this location since the 1670s; the current Gothic building was built in the 1840s.
Approximately three miles from Nassau and Paradise Island, the Blue Lagoon is a ferry/shuttle ride away. Featured in the movie “Splash,” this island offers a memorable experience. On this island you can swim with dolphins and watch sea lions. Hammocks and board games are available as is a restaurant and bar. With its less-crowded beaches, this island is perfect for family time and exploration.
Bahamas Diving Association is the official scuba diving association of the Bahamas. This association has a list of scuba companies they have approved in Nassau as well as other Bahamian islands. Grand Bahama/Freeport, Exuma, Cat Island, Abaco and Bimini are among the islands where you can enjoy the unique marine life of the Bahamas.
Compared to Mardi Gras, Junkanoo, a celebration extending back to the sixteenth or seventeenth century, is one of the most colorful festivals in the Bahamian culture. Known for its exuberant dancing and colorful unique costumes, Junkanoo is traditionally celebrated from late Christmas evening (December 25) to the early morning hours of Boxing Day ( December 26). Originally a day of celebration for the slaves who had a day off for Christmas, this festival is steeped in Afro-Caribbean music and traditions. Steel drums and cow bells are heard as elaborate costumes are displayed. The troupes that compete for the cash prize take months to create their costumes, which are top secret until displayed at Junkanoo. The Junkanoo Museum has costumes on display and visitors are often allowed to try on the headpieces. Not able to make it to the Bahamas for Christmas? Junkanoo is held on Independence day (July 10) as well (although on a smaller scale.)
In addition to the Nassau/Paradise Island part of the Bahamas, Grand Bahama/Freeport is a popular destination as well. This island also has Junkanoo and a Straw Market. With sandy beaches and clear water, this area is ideal for snorkeling. The outer islands are a wonderful place for those who do not want the hustle and bustle of a normal tourist area. Great Harbor Cay on the Berry Islands is beautiful and unspoiled. Bimini, off the coast of Florida, has beautiful scuba diving areas. No matter what you want, the Bahamas has it for you.
In a very eye-opening article recently posted on the site SEOMoz brought to light the fact that Google search results are now being directly impacted by the social connections of the person doing the searching. As the author of the piece astutely points out, “This should be giving everyone in search marketing a huge “ah ha” moment.”
The author of the piece, Rand Fishkin, presents this in a very clear format, showing in detail how search results are altered based on 1) if you are logged into Google and 2) whom you follow via social media.
The image below is a screenshot of a search he did while logged in to Google. You’ll see the #3 listing is for someone he follows (Note the Geraldine reference and image):
Now look at the same search results AFTER he looged out of Google:
The difference is quite staggering, is it not?
As the author goes on to say, “…the reach of your social network and the sharing you do to those networks will have a substantive, possibly massive, effect on your search traffic.”
Over at another site, christopherspenn.com, an article written by Mr. Penn, who is a co-founder of Pod-camp with Chris Brogan, among many other things, refers to this news as “monumental” saying “If you’re marketing something, there’s now a direct incentive to build your network as large as possible among your prospective customers.”
This is all very compelling stuff here, so much so that I wanted to get one of our experts’ opinion on all this. So I tracked down Josh Spiegel, one of our Search Marketing Managers for this thoughts and he hit me with this very powerful and emphatic edict, fi you will…
“If you don’t have a presence in social, you’ll lose your presence in search.”
Now… let that sink in for a few minutes.
